The San Francisco Film Society today announced the complete schedule of films and events that will make up the 59th San Francisco International Film Festival, running April 21 - May 5 at the Castro Theatre, Alamo Drafthouse New Mission, the Roxie Theater and the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco and BAMPFA in Berkeley.

Highlights from today's press conference included these announcements:
Mira Nair will be the recipient of this year's Irving M. Levin Directing Award, which has been given to the masters of world cinema since 1986. Nair will participate in an onstage discussion of her career, followed by a first look at footage from her upcoming project Queen of Katwe and a full screening of Monsoon Wedding. Wesley Morris, the Pulitzer-winning film and cultural critic now of the New York Times, will give this year's State of Cinema Address. Each year the Festival invites a cultural thought leader to examine important trends in global filmmaking, and Morris will be tackling the current climate of race in the movies through an analysis of the radicalization of Sidney Poitier. The SFIFF59 lineup includes a record number of films that were supported by SFFS grants and residencies; there are films supported by each Filmmaker360 program, from the flagship SFFS / KRF Filmmaking Grant, to the Documentary Film Fund, to FilmHouse Residencies and more. Titles include Guetty Felin's Ayiti Mon Amour, Maris Curan's Five Nights in Maine, Ian Olds' The Fixer, Amanda Micheli's haveababy, Mike Day's The Islands and the Whales, Moby Longinotto's The Joneses, and Mike Plunkett's Salero. The Festival will feature World Cinema Spotlight: Animating the Image, a selection of eight programs that will explore the innovative use of animation in several feature and short films including Hanna Sköld's Granny's Dancing on the Table; Roger Ross Williams' Life, Animated; Penny Lane's NUTS!, Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli's Phantom Boy; Lewis Klahr's Sixty Six, and more.
