OPENING FILM OF THE VIENNALE 2016
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA | Director Kenneth Lonergan, Guest of the Festival
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA by the American director and scriptwriter Kenneth Lonergan will be screened in Vienna’s Gartenbaukino on October 20 and marks the beginning of the festival. Starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Matthew Broderick and Lucas Hedges, the film caused a stir at this year’s Sundance, Telluride and Toronto film festivals and is meanwhile regarded as a serious Oscar contender. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA is only the director’s third film in 16 years, since YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (2000) and MARGARET (2011), which received the FIPRESCI Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics at the Viennale 2012.
Besides the opening film, the Viennale is dedicating a special tribute to the director, featuring the aforementioned films and an additional carte blanche. As well as attending the opening of the Viennale as our guest, Kenneth Lonergan will also be present to personally discuss his works with festival audiences over the ensuing days. We are proud to be the first festival to pay tribute to Kenneth Lonergan, one of the most important exponents of contemporary American cinema, and also have him present in Vienna.
