I’ve always been convinced that films should arise from sorrow or from joy. DAWN, however, is a particularly singular film – I didn’t know that sorrow and joy could be so simultaneous. Like dying and being born at the same time.
Laila Pakalniņa, writer/director
Told in the old style of the Soviet fairy tale, almost 100 years after the October Revolution in 1917, DAWN heralds a morally confused world when adults and children lost their bearings in the melee of propaganda. On the Soviet collective farm, Dawn, Little Janis denounces his father to Communist Secret Police and must now deal with the consequences. The question is - who is good, and who is evil?
