The 10 features to compete in the International Feature Film Competition section of the 58th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and its jury have been announced. Supported by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture and hosted by the Mayor of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Muhittin Böcek, the festival kicks off on 2 October. The films shortlisted for the International Feature Film Competition will compete for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress awards.
Dorota Kędzierzawska to Chair International Feature Film Competition Jury
The Polish director Dorota Kędzierzawska will act as the head of the jury for the International Feature Film Competition. After having completed her film and theatre education at the University of Łódź, The Russian State University of Cinematography, and National Film School in Łódź, Kędzierzawska received many awards over the years with her shorts as well as documentaries. Her debut feature Devils, Devils and her second feature Crows won awards at Cannes Film Festival in 1991 and 1994, respectively. Her 2010-title Tomorrow Will Be Better won Best Feature Film at Berlin Film Festival.
Other members of the jury are as follows: The Golden-Globe-winning actor Ali Suliman, whose career took a significant turn with his performance in Paradise Now when the title was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Film. After this, Suliman got major parts in such successful titles as Body of Lies, The Kingdom, and Lone Survivor, paving his way to the Best Actor Award at last year’s festival for his role in 200 Meters. The journalist and film critic Eva af Geijerstam writes at the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and acted as a jury member previously in Venice, Rotterdam, and Turin festivals. A member of EFA, César, and Asia Pacific Screen Academy, the producer Guillaume de Seille worked in the cinema department of French television channels after writing and directing a number of shorts. His productions were screened at many festivals including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and St Sebastian. Actress Margita Gosheva, who gave an unforgettable performance in the film Glory, played major parts in successful titles from Bulgaria such as The Lesson, Glory and LightThereafter. Gosheva won many awards in festivals across France, Brazil, India, Romania, Lithuania, and Bulgaria for her part in The Lesson.
Women directors stand out this year in the International Feature Film Competition!
A total of 10 titles from Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Czechia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Mexico, Monaco, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and USA will have their Turkey premieres at the International Feature Film Competition section of the 58th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Five films in the selection are directed by women.
Previously screened at Rotterdam and San Sebastian film festivals, Aurora by Paz Fabrega narrates the emotions, changing roles, and the evolving friendship of two women around unwanted pregnancy through a sensitive, caring lens. Written and directed by BAFTA-nominee Clio Barnard,Ali & Ava is a contemporary romance wrapped in humour and music. Screened at Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals, Futura by Alice Rohrwacher, Pietro Marcello, and Francesco Munzi paints a bitter portrait of Italian youth and the state, weighed down by the global precarity. Directed by Manuel Nieto Zas and screened at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival, The Employer and the Employee spotlights the economic and social inequalities in today’s Uruguay through the friendship of two men. The film makes an uneasy but touching point about class and conscience. Clara Roquet’s Libertad, which competed in Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival, depicts the summer friendship of two young girls, while turning a critical eye on the exploitation of migrant domestic workers in the world of grown-ups. Screened at Venice Film Festival, Hole in the Fence by Joaquin del Paso is a psychological thriller about the authoritarian trends among groups of blind faith and paints a dismal portrait of the darker corners of humanity across the globe. Received with praise at the Venice Film Festival, The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic by Teemu Nikki is a film about the power of love, focusing on the dangerous journey undertaken by an MS patient with vision impairment to reach his lover. Finally, Florence Miailhe’s debut animation feature The Crossing is another finalist anticipated with excitement. Miailhe, whose short film “Au Premier Dimanche D’août” won César Award, narrates extraordinary adventures of two siblings in an ominous world through paintings on glass.
The award-winning titles of the International Feature Film Competition are as follows.
Fred Baillif’s sharp-sighted study of protective measures for the youth turning out to be the very source of danger, The Fam received Generation 14Plus Grand Prix at Berlinale. Winner of Best Film and Best Scenario awards at Tribeca Film Festival, Brighton 4th also brought its director and lead Levan Koguashvili Best Actor award. Reminding some classical titles about the lives and dreams of migrants left outside of both worlds, the film narrates the story of a former wrestler Kakhi, travelling from Tiflis to Brooklyn to save his son from a gang.
The winners of the International Feature Film Competition will be announced at the Closing and Awards Ceremony on the evening of Saturday, October 9, 2021.
The head of 58th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is the Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality Muhittin Böcek. The administrative director is Cansel Tuncer, the director is Ahmet Boyacıoğlu, and the artistic director is Başak Emre. The directors of Antalya Film Forum are Müge Özen and Pınar Evrenosoğlu.
