During 38.WFF we will show the documentary debut of the Oscar and Palme d'Or winner at Cannes. The film "The Forest Maker" tells the story of an extraordinary man. Tony Rinaudo, as he is referred to, was honored with the Right Livelihood Award, an award given to individuals working on practical and exemplary solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the world. The award is often referred to as the "alternative Nobel Prize."
Tony Rinaudo found a way to grow trees, in the most arid lands of Africa. He used stumps and roots to create an "underground forest." In this way, he provided food and livelihoods for thousands of farmers in Africa. "The chief of all farmers," as he is fondly called today in many villages, had to fight a hard battle to get his ideas accepted.

Volker Schlöndorff was one of the founders of the movement known as New German Cinema. He began his career working with such masters as Louis Malle, Alain Renais and Jean-Pierre Melville. He made his first film in 1966. In 1973, he founded the company Bioskop Film. He directed many opera productions in Frankfurt, Berlin and Paris. Since 1992, he has been head of Studio Babelsberg. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes and an Oscar for "The Tin Drum" (1979).
