≪Notes and Quotes from the Press Conference≫

Yasushi SHIINA - Director General, Tokyo International Film Festival(TIFF & TIFFCOM)I would like to emphasis major objectives of the festival are to motivate people in the movie industry while strengthening brand-recognition of the TIFF among general consumers by introducing worth to watch movies. We are aiming at win-win situation that having strong name recognition of TIFF to lead growth of the movie industry and getting more audience to see movies.

Daihachi YOSHIDA (Director, “Pale Moon” from Competition section)When I read the novel, I became interested in story angles about a woman who is indulged by a man and money that represent issues in the Japanese society. It was very lucky to have Rie MIYAZAWA the actress for the movie as she has been devoting playing at theater past 7 years. I am looking forward talking with people who visit the festival and also to capture the excitement and energy that everybody has in the world of film making.

Miki NAKATANI (Festival Muse)

I am honored to be the festival muse and would like to participate in the festival as a big movie fan as well. Films helped me out from loneliness and sadness, while giving joy, happiness, and fulfillment. I guess film has a role to sooth and heal people in their busy life, and sometimes make them escape from their reality and they can dream. Film has such a power, I believe.

Video message from ICHIKAWA Somegoro Ⅶ (Special Night Event at Kabukiza Theatre)I will give a Kabuki performance this year, TIFF2014 presents Special Night Event at the Kabukiza Theatre. The Shakkyo is a classic and popular Kabuki dance. I play the role of a lion-like animal that is an icon of strength. It is great honor for me and for Kabuki, as well, to present Kabuki to guests from around the world at a special Kabuki theatre. Regarding the screening of Chaplin’s “City Lights” at the Kabukiza Theatre, Kabuki people were impressed by “City Lights” and created a Kabuki story adopting concept of the film. I feel that this event was destined to be shown at the Kabukiza Theatre.

≪Section introductions≫

Competition - Yoshi YATABE, Programming Director

This year, we might say the common theme among the competition films is about the "people have their backs to the wall", who have been in cornered. Because in the changing society people cannot avoid the impact of such changes in the environment, so they have been in cornered in their situation and they have to escape from their precariat situation. Even though they are in different situations all the films are about such cornered people getting into the next stage. It is all about “How to live tomorrow?” That is the theme and that is the common theme among all films in the Competition section.

Asian Future & CROSSCUT ASIA #01 Thai Fascination-Kenji ISHIZAKA, Programming Director

The Asian Future section is for first or second feature films made in Asia and established last year. We increased the competition films from 8 (last year) to 10 this year, and we selected various types of movies from 10 different countries. 9 out of 10 films are World Premiere at TIFF, so we keep searching fresh films from all Asian countries and regions. These 10 films are selected from nearly 250 films in our competition, their stories are very rich and mostly based on record or memory about the past and the changes in the present. Because Asian countries are undergoing modernization and there are drastic changes in those countries.

Regarding CROSSCUT ASIA, it is the first TIFF and Japan Foundation Asia Center’s collaboration series starting from this year. We choose Thailand as the first special selected country because we have not chosen one country for a series for a long time, so we wanted to revisit Thai film which has diversity from art film to horror. Many directors and actors/actresses are coming to TIFF from Thailand.

Japanese Cinema Splash - Yoshi YATABE, Programming Director

We are honored to have this section to be the introduction for young talented filmmaker from Japan. It was the great example that "FORMA" the last year's awarded title went to various film festivals from this section. We are hoping to have some titles to be expand overseas like "FORMA."

≪New initiatives of the 27th TIFF≫

Antenna Documentary Film festival is proud to announce this year’s lineup of respected local and international guests, featuring award-winning filmmakers and industry experts including Vice President of Artist Programs at Tribeca Film Institute Ryan Harrington and Multi-Award winning Spanish director Ventura Durall.

Ryan Harrington is an esteemed and dynamic force in the documentary world, and has supported over 200 films in his tenure at the TFI. He provides over $2 million in grants to documentary, cross-platform and fiction storytellers, while developing filmmaker training labs and workshops worldwide. He has also managed the theatrical documentary arm of the A&E Television Networks, where he championed the films American Teen and My Kid Could Paint That and the Oscar-nominated Murderball and Jesus Camp.

He will feature at the festival as both, a member of the international competition jury and as part of the festival’s DocTalk event.

Multi-Award winning Spanish director Ventura Durall and emerging Spanish filmmaker Jordi Morato will attend the festival to screen their films, bringing fresh and unique insights to audiences.

Ventura Durall’s latest film Bugarach, which is Antenna’s 0pening Night film, was premiered in competition at the prestigious Vision Du Reel and Hot Docs Film Festival (2014). His previous films have premiered at IDFA, Dok-Leipzig and Sundance and won awards in more than 15 international film festivals. The Creator of the Jungle (“Sobre la marxa”) is the debut feature length film from Jordi Murató and has screened at Rotterdam, Hot Docs, BFI and Vision De Réel. His previous work includes the award-winning short film “Cami de terra”. Both filmmakers will participate in a Q&A session after the screening of their films.

Cutting-edge Filmmakers Sam Smail, Nick Watson and Nathan Penlington will also attend the festival, bringing with them for the first time in Australia their unique Choose Your Own Documentary as a not-to-be-missed program highlight. Described by The Independant as ”Deeply nostalgic and Dazzingly modern”, Choose Your Own Documentary follows Nathan Penlington and his team as they embark on an epic and emotional quest of obsession, friendship, loss and adventure. But there is a twist. The destiny is in the hands of the audience, who decide Nathan’s fate from over 1,500 paths and multiple endings via remote controls.

Sam Culter, the former band manger of the Rolling Stones will also attend this year’s festival and will hold a Q&A after the screening of the classic documentary, Gimme Shelter. And the other winners are:

  • MIDDLE MAN directed by Charlie Francis – Best British Short sponsored by Pinewood Studios and described by the jury as a perfect short film.

  • Boy Meets Girl directed by Eric Schaeffer - Iris Prize Best Feature Award

  • Michael Welch (Robby) in Boy Meets Girl Best Actor in a Feature

  • Kate Trotter (Alise) in Tru Love Best Actress in a Feature

  • BOMBSHELL directed by Erin Sanger (USA) - Iris Prize Youth Award sponsored by Cardiff University.

All God’s Creatures about the relationship between two young brothers following the death of their father has been announced as winner of the 2014 Iris Prize – Cardiff’s International Gay and Lesbian Short Film Prize supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation. The £25,000 prize will allow the filmmaker to make a new short film in the UK.

At the sold out Iris Awards 2014 presented by Amy Lamé at Cardiff’s Park Inn Hotel, Lord Glendonbrook announced that the international jury had selected filmmaker Brendon McDonall from Australia to scoop the coveted award.

Sara Sugarman, Chair of the Iris Prize Jury said, “Iris’ 2014 theme was ‘bigger and better’, and this was nowhere more evident than on the screen.  The standard of films this year was exceptionally high, covering a rich diversity of genres and themes, and this made for some very robust jury discussions.  We were really pleased to see stories tackling some of the most pressing issues affecting the LGBT community globally, as well as more intimate, personal dramas.”

Three short films reached the final stage of the competition. They were:

  1. All God’s Creatures

“All God’s Creatures is a brilliantly executed film, with wonderful performances from its two young leads and beautiful art direction.  At its heart it covers all LGBT issues about being comfortable with who you are.”

  1. Aban + Korshid

“Aban + Korshid is an intensely moving and delicate piece of filmmaking, and makes a strong political statement about LGBT human rights.”

  1. Bombshell

“Bombshell was another film that used its young actors to excellent effect, and told a  gripping and beautifully crafted story of lesbian empowerment.”

The Iris Prize Best British Short was presented to MIDDLE MAN directed by Charlie Francis who was at the ceremony. The new award is sponsored by Pinewood Studios who have committed services valued at £14,000 for the winner’s next short film. Jury Chair Judith Nobel said: “Middle Man is a perfect short film. It is beautifully structured, witty and touching. In 5 minutes we have watched great directing, wonderful characterisation, excellent editing and a great story. A story about love with universal appeal.” There was also a Commendation for WE ARE FINE directed by Simon Savory.

The Best Feature Award was presented to BOY MEETS GIRL. The jury which included former Iris Prize winner Eldar Rapaport was presented by Martin Briggs who said: “Boy Meets Girl has an emotional depth, an honesty and directness, lightened by moments of sharp wit with final notes of hope and determination that left us with tears streaming down our faces.”

The performance awards sponsored by Gay Star New were presented to Michael Welch for his role as Robby in Boy Meets Girl and Kate Trotter who played Alice in Tru Love. Presenting the Award Tris Reid-Smith and Lynne Reynolds said, "This has been a breakthrough year for features at Iris and our deliberations were tough but the performances we chose represent  the best of LGBT cinema - challenging, heart-warming and true".

Finally, the Iris Prize Youth Award was presented to BOMBSHELL directed by Erin Sanger from the USA. The Youth Jury said, “This film is really useful as a teaching aid because issues of identity and prejudice are drawn out authentically for a teenage audience. It is a perfectly scripted and played mood piece that discusses misogyny and encourages empathy with those who are perceived not to be normal."

There was also a special mention for Butterfly as a positive film that helps us understand the realities of living with aspergers and transgender issues."

Festival guests included directors Till Kleinert (The Samurai, Germany) and Daniel Ribero (The Way He Looks, Brazil); and a strong UK contingency including Paul Sweeney, Senior Film Buyer for Cineworld , Andrew M Smith (Pinewood Studios). The International Jury included last year’s Iris Prize winner Tim Marshall from Australia, Hen Yanni (Melting Away, Israel), Diva Magazine’s Film Editor Joanna Benecke and TLV Fest founder Yair Hockner.

Opening Night of the New Hungarian Film Week with a tribute to Kertész

By Alex Deleon, <filmfestivals,com>

Greetings from the Capitol:

Made it back to BP by Icetrain from Miskolc.

What a contrast! -- after a month in the provinces  I had almost forgotten that Budapest is one of the Great Capitol cities of Europe!

Magnificent openings gála party at the ultra modern Bartók music Palace was truly palatial. Plenty to eat and drink with slices of smoked goose leg one the many gastronomic delights. Checked into the 8th floor of the official festival Hotel MERCURE, overlooking the back of castle Hill here on the Buda side of town ~ nursing a slight sore throat but otherwise in one piece,

The opening film was a showing of a rare one hundred year old film,"TOLOCA"

From the year 1919 -- when Chaplin was all the rage elsewhere -- by director Mihály Kertész, later to become a Hollywood legend under the Americanized name of "Michael Cutiz" of Casablanca and countless other Hollywood Golden Era milestones.

A giant hanging photographic portrait of Kertész plus a hanging still from the film dominated the post screening bash in the upper balcony of the palace as a fine pianist provided a highly amplified medley of standard ballads including "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca. The only way to describe this setting  -- A XXI Century update of the castle in the "Adventures of Robin Hood" co-directed by Curtiz in 1938.  The silent film was accompanied by a full Hungarian orchestra in the main music hall of the palace where the cream of international classic music artists are the regular attraction. The last time I was here it was English maestro Simon Rattle wielding baton on stage.

In a word the revived Hungarian film week is off and running in grand style after a two year hiatus during which it was beginning to look like the glories of Hungarian cinema were a thing of the past -- dead and all but buried -- to the point that the Hungarian film week was abruptly cancelled by Bela Tarr two years ago, under the claim that there was no longer anything worth showing.

Now under the guidance of former Hollywood producer András "Andy" Vajna it looks like the Requiem for Magyar cinema was perhaps a bit premature.

If the films we see in the coming week live up to the promise of openings night we're in for a heady ride,

RIck Blaine, Budapest, looking for Letters of transit -- and, "Round up the usual suspects!"

EPISTLE 2 FROM BUDAPEST

DAY 2, Tuesday, October 24, 2014

Athletes in Exile, Dogs on a Rampage and an Unlikely elderly Star

  By Alex Delonian. <filmfestivals.com>

The first full day of the MAGYAR FILMHÉT was a busy one,

Three interesting films, all in the big hall, one good rap with a director, and generally

Meeting people and getting a feel for this newly modified once regular Budapest film event.

Film  number one was a great discovery. I was told it would be a doc about famous Hungarian

Soccer (Futbol) Heroes, but it turned out to be much more than that and I had a nice chat

With the Director, Tibor Kocsis,  following the screening in the buzzing Lobby. Ran into several People who recognized me from CINEFEST in Miskolc, and also a lady with Perfect English, Ágnes Hava, who is chief executive of the Hungarian National Film Fund and currently the  chief spokesman for Hungarian Cinema at Major Festivals such as Karlovy Vary -- in short, one if the prime movers in the campaign to get Hungarian cinema back to where it once belonged.

The Second film, WHITE GOD (Fehér Isten) is all about dogs and dogcatchers but it's no 'Lassie Come Home' -- more a surreal Tale of Mans Best Friend in collective Rebellion against his two legged Masters.  13 year-old Lili fights to protect her pet Hagen from the dog butchers. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing that love conquers all she ....

Won a Prize at Cannes but left the audience too stunned to applaud here. First Film I've ever Seen where notdog, like Lassie -- but Canines inGeneral, are the stars. In a weird way it reminded me of Planet of the Apes. Definitely not a feel good film but a one-of-a-Kind thought provoker.   I had to sort of hide from it by taking Cat naps along the way and came out not really being able to say that I thought it was 'good or bad' -- but certainly not indifferent.  It is clearly meant to be seen as a metaphor for all the madness and Power Games at loose in the world today, but it is so realistically presented that it just exists for what it is -- a girl musician and her dog and their problems with the crazy dogcatchers and music teachers ... And on that level it's pretty scary -- almost a horror flick.

The big question is, how did director Kornel Mundruczo get all these dogs to do exactly what he wanted them to do on screen.  Mind bender.

Director Mundruczó Kornél and his two stars, HAGEN, and Psotta Zsofia at Cannes

The Third film of the day, the Nightcap that ended around Ten thirty, was Janos Szasz' arty WW II period Epic, "The Notebook" (A nagy füzet), the only really big Hungarian film of 2013, that I have been hoping to catch up with all year.  Classically filmed as are all of János's films, but a harrowing tale of two teenage twin boys who are left by their mother with an extremely stout, blunt, and tough-as-nails grandmother out in the country so they can survive the war. Left me drained -- the kind of drain You feel after taking an emotional roller coaster ride through a fully satisfying picture. Details later, but thus is one of the new recent Hungarian biggies.  Heavy set 69 year old actress Piroska Molnár, who is memorable from her very first scene in the picture playing the estranged acid-tongued country grandmother, is currently one of the busiest "Leading ladies" in magyar pictures. She was equally memorable in the highly controversial Hungarian Film Szemle winner TAXIDERMIA in 2006, and Will also be seen here this week in the lead role of the surrealistic chiller FREE FALL.

Sixty-nine year old actress Piroska Molnár is living Proof that You don't have to look like Scarlett Johansson to be a star -- gobs of outrageous talent can be enough and this gal has it.

The Football film is known as "Hungarians For Barça" where Barça is the nickname of the Barcelona FC (football club) probably the most popular in all of Europe. The director is Tibor Kocis who has a long documentary track record and speaks fluent English. What Kocsis does is follow the lives,  careers,  and families of three postwar Hungarian Soccer stars who are more famous in Spain  than they are here because, to get away from Communism they built entire careers playing in Spain for the Barcelona club where they were absolutely idolized. But, again, this is far more than a Sportsumentary because it's more about the personalities of these magnificent athletes in self imposed exile, how they took worship in a foreign country in stride, and answered to a higher human purpose. This is a real heartfelt and heartwarming film and you don't really need to know anything about European soccer or Hungary itself to relate to it. I just loved it and Kocsis will be ringing this marvelous picture -- a documentary that is more like a lesson in life than a documentary -- to Los Angeles soon for the L.A. Hungarian film festival. Make absolutely sure not to miss it.

That's it for now, gotta hit the hay -- tomorrow is another big day, and thus time I'll bring My iPad along to take Pictures

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE FESTIVAL CIRCUIT

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 4.53.11 PM

It seems like a funny question—doesn’t everyone want to premiere at Los Angeles Film Festival or Sundance or Toronto? But earlier this month when festival insider Peter Belsito of SydneysBuzz came to Film Independent to talk about festival strategy, he asked it quite seriously. “They only cost money,” he said. “You don’t make any money at a festival. Why do you want to go there? To get a deal? You can probably forget that. Sundance in their biggest year had 30 deals. And even a lot of those were just representation deals—they weren’t distribution or anything. So why do you want to go to these events?”

The answer: Marketing. “To get the review,” Belsito said. “To meet the people from the trade. That’s why you go to these events. So when you look at your year and the kind of events you want to go to, you have to plan it very carefully.” Belsito laid out how festivals function in an industry capacity and gave his advice on how filmmakers should navigate them.

“When I was a kid in Flushing, NY, there were three film festivals in the world: Cannes, Venice and the New York Film Festival,” Belsito recalled. “The scene is always shifting on these festivals. They may seem stable, but they’re not. They’re always shifting, and you have to keep that in mind. And for you to then decide—should I go to this festival or that festival? You really have to look at the current picture.”

When making that decision, he noted, filmmakers need to be careful. You can submit freely to all the festivals you want, but it would be unwise to blindly accept the first one that accepts you. Most major festivals require that your film has its world premiere there, and the smaller ones will often insist on a regional premiere. Festivals almost always charge an application fee (though you can try befriending programmers via email, and they might help you out with a discount code), but smaller ones will sometimes pay to screen a film, especially if it’s already shown at a bigger festival and they want to add that prestige to their program. It’s a good idea to include festivals in your budget from the very beginning; publicists’ fees and travel expenses aren’t cheap.

There’s two parts to film,” Belsito explained. “There’s the creative process of making the film, and then there’s the business process of distributing it. Both are absolutely necessary. You’ve got to do it. You just have to put on different hats.” Festivals fall into the business category, and the most significant ones happen alongside markets.

The five major film markets are Cannes, Toronto, AFM, Berlinale and, as Belsito called it, “a big one in Utah in January.” All of these except AFM have a festival attached to the market (AFI Fest happens around the same time as AFM but, Belsito noted, they can’t make people drive from Santa Monica to Hollywood at rush hour and still claim to be a single event). The Cannes Film Festival screens 100 movies; the Cannes Film Market, according to what the event’s director recently told Belsito, had over 5,000 new films and did over $1 billion worth of business last year.

If your film doesn’t make it into one of the big five, there are still a lot of benefits to screening at smaller, regional festivals, Belsito argued, and in the US, it’s best to aim for festivals in New York or Los Angeles. “That’s where the media is, and that’s where the film business is,” he explained simply. In addition, the big five festivals will screen films that are hard for smaller-scale films to compete with: “What I always say is, the best news and the worst news you’ve ever gotten is that you’re in Sundance,” Belsito said, getting a bit of a laugh. “I’m quite serious. How do you raise your head above the Brad Pitt or Ethan Hawke stuff? It’s a problem at Sundance. [I’m not saying] that it’s impossible, but these are serious things you have to consider, and there’s a lot to be said for regional festivals. And I’m talking about the Seattles, the Bostons, the Miamis, the Dallases…”

The list goes on and on. Belsito knows the ins and outs of the festival circuit better than anyone; he’s been around the world going to festivals and has stories and opinions about all of them. SXSW? “The only event in the United States you can go to and perhaps meet somebody from the trade that’s not in New York or LA.” NYFF? “Bigger stars, more money, bigger budgets.” The Hamptons “has gone up and down and up and down and up and down over the years.” Santa Barbara “is not an LA festival. [It] is a regional festival.” Cannes wants Brad Pitt; Berlin is “a bit more maverick.” IDFA is “a wonderful thing, and it’s in Amsterdam. I mean, what’s not to like?”

“So somebody says to me, ‘What am I supposed to do at Cannes?’” Belsito said. “I say, ‘Collect faces.’” These events are for building your network as much as they are for drawing up contracts. One of the great things about the big international markets is the potential for connecting with possible future collaborators from other countries. “An American passport is the worst,” Belsito said. “The US has zero co-production treaties in the world, as opposed to this little country up the block called Canada, which has co-production treaties with every country in the world. So Canada passport: very good. US passport: not good.”

Setting up a co-production with a producer who has a more flexible passport can open doors all over the world. “And you know, what are we doing in film? Every single stage, you’re putting together teams,” Belsito explained, “to write the film, to edit the script, pre-production, production, post-production, distribution… Same thing. You need to put together teams.” And festivals are a great place to start.

When you’re sitting in meetings at Cannes or Berlin or wherever your movie’s journey takes you, Belsito said one thing you have to keep in mind: “You are the only one in the world who is bringing anything of value to the table.” It’s important to him that filmmakers are paid for their work, and he couldn’t emphasize enough that “they need you. They need to meet you. They need to know you. You’ve got to understand that, going into these markets, feeling really tiny or lost or what-the-hell-am-I-going-to-do, you’ve got to understand: you’re the most important person in the room.”
